WHAT IS CONSTRUCTION STAKING?

Construction staking is performed to ensure a project is built per engineering plans. It involves creating a visual layout of the construction plans where structures will be built. Interpreting construction plans, we place stakes to mark the measurements of proposed elements. This includes not just building, but also roads, walkways, curbs, plumbing, and drainage grades. The staked reference points guide the construction.

It stands to reason that for a construction project to be completed according to specifications, construction staking must be performed with the highest possible levels of accuracy. IMPORTANCE OF CONSTRUCTION STAKING:

Landowners: When building or remodeling a residential structure, accurately placing its foundation, driveway, site improvements and utilities is vital. Also, construction staking is useful when ensuring that structures and improvements reside within the property boundaries and setbacks.

Commercial Contractors/Engineers: When translating plans and blueprints to actual structures, accuracy is key to preventing costly mistakes. A commercial construction project involves many elements interacting together, and the displacement of a wall or pipe can have serious repercussions across the rest of the project, causing time delays and expensive corrections. Construction staking helps reduce the risk of error by enabling everyone involved with the physical construction to see exactly where each element must be placed.

ROLE OF THE SURVEYOR:

Accurate staking is a critical step in ensuring the success of a project. Engaging an experienced and licensed surveyor will guarantee accuracy and reliability of results. During site development, the land surveyor takes the designer’s plans and stakes their correct location on the ground so the buildings, roads, fences, electrical and other underground utilities can be placed in their correct location.

OTHER TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION SURVEYS:

AS-BUILT SURVEY

These show the current state of a site at various stages during a project and serve as close-out documents to verify that the work authorized was completed in compliance with standards and regulations. They're carried out right after a construction project for record, evaluation, and payment.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION SURVEY

These document conditions prior to construction work, including structures adjacent to or neighboring construction activity through. This occurs through visual observations, photographs, notes, and other diagnostic devices as warranted by project complexity.

UTILITY LOCATION SURVEY

These locate underground utilities, and other foreign objects essential to employing operations. Aboveground utilities on a property are identified and utilities identified as either marked on the surface by utility locators or shown on plans by utility companies.

HORIZONTAL CONTROL SURVEY

These coordinate positional data and provide a network of points on the ground that are used as the control for other surveys.
